Hosea
1 The Word of YHWH which was to Hosea, son of Beeri,
in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah
and in the days of Jeroboam, son of Joash, king of Israel.
2. The first time the Word of YHWH came to Hosea.
And YHWH said to Hosea,
"Go, take for yourself a wife of promiscuity
and children of promiscuity,
for the land has truly been promiscuous
against YHWH."
3. And he went, and he took Gomer, daughter of Diblaim. And she conceived, and she gave birth to a son for him. (4.) And YHWH said to him,
"Call his name, 'Jezreel,'
for just a little while will pass
and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel
against the house of Jehu,
and I will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to end.
5. And it will be on that day
that I will break the bow of Israel
in the valley of Jezreel."
6. She conceived again, and she gave birth to a daughter. And he said to him,
"Call her name 'Lo-Ruchamah,' [which means 'Not Loved']
For I will not continue anymore
to love the house of Israel,
and I surely will remove [it/myself] from them.
7. But I will love the house of Judah, and I will save them by YHWH their God, and I will not save them by bow, or by sword, or by battle, by horses, or by horsemen."
8. And she weaned Lo-Ruchamah, and she conceived again, and she gave birth to a son. And he said,
"Call his name 'Lo-Ammi,' [which means 'Not My People']
For you are not my people,
and I am not your God."
2 And the number of the sons of Israel will be like the sand of the sea which is not measured and is not numbered, and it will be that in the place where it was said to them, "You are Lo-Ammi, not my people," then he will say to them, "Sons of the living God." (2.) And the sons of Judah will be gathered, and the sons of Israel together, and they will name for themselves one head, and they will sprout up from the land, for great is the day of Jezreel.
3. Say to your brothers, "Ammi," and to your sisters, "Ruchamah."

Let her turn her promiscuity away from her face
And her adultery from between her breasts.
5. Or else I will strip her naked
And I will make her as on the day of her birth.
And I will set her as in the desert,
And I will make her like a land of drought,
And I will kill her with thirst.
6. And her children, I will not love,
For they are children of promiscuity.
7. For their mother was promiscuous.
When she conceived them, she made herself wither.
For she said, "I will go after my lovers,
Who give my bread and my water,
My wool and my flax,
My oil and my drink."
8. Therefore look: I will fence [her] way in with thorns
And I will wall up her wall
And she will not find her paths.
9. And she will pursue her lovers,
And she will not overtake them.
And she will seek them, and will not find.
And she will say, "I will go and return to my first husband,
For it was better for me then than now."
10. And she did not know that I myself gave her
Grain, and new wine, and fresh oil;
I gave much silver to her, and gold
(Which they made for Baal)
11. Therefore I will return
And I will take back my grain at its time,
And my new wine at its appointed time,
And I will snatch away my wool and my flax
That cover her nakedness.
12. And now I will uncover her genitals in the eyes of her lovers, and not one shall deliver her from my hand.
13. And I will cause all her joy to cease:
Her feasts, her new moons, and her sabbaths,
And all her appointed festivals
14. And I will make her vines desolate,
And her figs, about which she said,
"These are my prostitute's wages,
Which my lovers gave me"
And I will make them a wilderness,
And the wild animals of the field will eat them.
15. And I will visit on her the days of the Ba'als
When she burned incense to them,
And she adorned [them] with her earrings and her jewels,
And she went after her lovers
And as for me, she forgot me.
--This is a saying of YHWH.
16. Therefore, look: I myself will seduce her
And cause her to go into the wilderness
And I will speak to her heart.
17. And I will give her vineyards to her from there,
And the Valley of Achor for a door of hope
And she will answer [there] as in the days of her youth
As in the day she came up from the land of Egypt.
18. And on that day
-- This is a saying of YHWH --
you will call me "my man."
And you will not call me "my Ba'al" anymore.*
19. And I will remove the name of the Ba'als from her mouth,
And they will not be remembered by their names anymore.
20. And I will make a covenant with them in that day,
With the animals of the field,
And with the birds of the skies,
And with the creeping things of the ground,
And I will destroy bow, and sword, and battle from the earth.
And I will make them lie down in safety.
21. And I will become engaged to you forever;
I will become become engaged to you in righteousness,
And in justice, and in loyal love, and in compassion.
22. And I will become engaged to you in steadfastness,
And you will know YHWH.
23. And it will be in that day that I will answer,
-- This is a saying of YHWH --
I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth.
24. And the earth will answer the grain and the wine and the oil,
And they will answer Jezreel
25. And I will sow her to me in the earth,
And I will love Lo-Ruchamah (Not-Loved),
And I will say to Lo-Ammi (Not-My-People), "My people."
And he will say to me, "My God."
*2:18 - Both terms here are different ways to express the meaning "my husband." In Hebrew, ba'al is not just the name of a foreign deity, but is also the word for "master" or "lord." Both in the ancient world and in modern Hebrew, the word ba'al is the most common word for "husband." Similarly, "man" can mean "husband."
For they are children of promiscuity.
